This is a very ambivalent topic for me. On the one hand I am glad that these people are getting the care they have been waiting for and desperately need. On the other hand what does it really mean? What is the benchmark we are setting here? Once we start with private healthcare there is no turning back. Then we get into other issues, will we need insurance? Who will take care of the lower incomes for healthcare? The government to date has done very little to answer and real questions about this, so one can only assume it is here to stay, and they are just giving us time to adjust to it. Which could be good or bad.
Here is my concern. What will this do the private sector, will we start seeing private healthcare pooping up all over the place now. If we do will they be competing for the contracts, in the future I mean. We all know what happens there the bottom line (cheaper wins) so what will happen to the quality of our healthcare in Canada? We need to have those questions asked and the government needs to answer them.
I think this is an awesome idea, less get rid of government healthcare. The only thing they have done over the past 20 years is show us they cannot manage the Healthcare system. Less move it to the private sector so maybe we can all now get some real care for a change. In order to see a doctor now you have to take the whole day off work, lose the pay, and still end up with little or nothing, when it is all said and done. Screw the government!!!
I am all for private health care. When I rencently hurt my shoulder and my prthopedic surgeon wanted an MRI done, I was told by my local hospital in New Brunswick the waiting list was approximatly 6 months. Workers comp set me up with a private MRI clinic in Halifax a 3 days after calling them I was in for my MRI. So now thanks to the quick MRI, I am ready to begin to work again and if I waited for the public health care system, I would still have another 3 months to wait for my MRI.
I honestly believe the biggest hindrance to private health care is just the feeling of the unknown. Yes it puts a higher priority to the rich and people with insurance, and the low income or poor do not get as good healthcare. However the system we have now fails to help the rich or the poor. So what do we do? Honestly I would rather pay for insurance and have real healthcare, then deal with what we have at the moment. I do not like this idea and am mixed on it, however my logic is this. When I need healthcare I would like to be able to receive it, and the preset system doesn’t meet that need. The Canadian Medicare System has failed us, if you don’t believe me go in the hospital in a waiting room and see how many people actual walk out of the waiting room is dismay, because they have to work to feed their kids, and pay their bills and cannot be there all day waiting for a doctor. We don’t choose to be sick, and when we are the system just takes way to long to help us.
The problem I have with private healthcare is the only thing that matters to the provider is money and the bottom line. We have become nothing but numbers and statistics in this delema
We have a great system, but it has many flaws. Why are some people forced to travel to the United States to get much need healthcare for diseases like cancer ?
Private healthcare's bottom line maybe money, but one this is for sure. If they don't provide good service there not going to make any money. As opposed to the system we have now, NO profit and NO service. So I feel we would get a better service from the private sector. Who cares if there making a profit, what doesn’t now a days. I would like to have some healthcare for a change. I am so frustrated with the Medicare system it is just unreal.
You guys are out to lunch if you think that the private healthcare is going to be better. we need to work on the system we have. Private healthcare is going to cost more then most can afford, yes it will start off nice and easy. Then we will need to pay everything we have and more just to get healtcare. I do not want to become like the U.S. where the rich are taken care of and the poor die because they didn't have enough money. I love Canada because it is different. Lets get the system we have working
Maybe to raise much needed revenue for our health system why not raise the price of a pack of cigarettes to 15 or 20 bucks ? Heavy smokers should pay up front for their lung and heart surgery People that try to look after themselves should not subsidize people that deliberatly harm their systems !!!!
I agree that we should not subsidize people that abuse their bodies heavily. Why not reward people that try to do healthy things like join the gym, etc. They save the healthcare system money in the long run
I do not think in a free society that we should decide what is considered health for one another, Regardless of what you do. Healthcare is a right, not a promise to be only taken care if you only do this right or that. Smoking may hurt your health but it is their choice, like it or not. If someone attempts to commit suicide do we just leave them, because that is considered unhealthy? When you make those kinds of comments you blur the lines of reason and border on discrimination. I never want to go down that road as that is more slippery then private healthcare. As far at the private healthcare issues, who knows? Wait and see I guess.
We all know the diseases smoking causes. They should pay more taxes or higher premiums period !!
Why should people that live a healthy lifestyle pay for people that choose poison themselves. They are costing the system too much money and the deserving people have to go without
